Gift of Freedom
"Merry Christmas From Afar"

I send Christmas wishes to my family
Across a distance that is so vast
That I am unable to see or touch them
Except by looking into the past

I won’t be joining my loved ones
As they eat dinner on Christmas day
Or be watching as they open their gifts
I have only memories to replay

I cannot shop for the perfect presents
Or wrap them up with a pretty bow
I can only offer the gift of freedom
With the seeds that I now sow

Instead during this Holiday Season
I take comfort from a different source
That my absence brings them security
As I stand alongside our military force

My gift is leaving my home behind
And coming to a foreign place
In an attempt to bring a future peace
And give freedom to another race

The miles separating us mean nothing
Because my family resides in my heart
The happy memories will sustain me
Until the time we are no longer apart
